Introduction

Center for Civil Law of the Department of Law of National Chengchi University was established in August 2000 with the professors and graduate students as its main members. The major research objectives include Civil Law, Civil Law Procedure, Fair Trade Law, International Trade Law, Consumer Protection Law, Government Purchase Law, Law on Non-Litigation, Compulsory Execution Law, Bankruptcy Law, Arbitration Law and other relevant laws. Though established relatively late compared to other research centers of College of Law, thanks to the unreserved efforts of the faculty members and students, our center has been enriched with valuable resources and facilities. It is expected that in the civil legal field, our center, cooperating with the social development and combining the practice with the theory, will make more contribution to the society. The developmental direction of our center is presented as follows:

Faculty and Courses

At present, there are ten full-time teachers in the Research Center of Civil Law, giving lectures to Civil Law (including General Principles, Civil Law: General Provisions of Obligations, Civil Law: Kinds of Obligations, Civil Law: Property and Family and Succession Law), Civil Law Procedure, Fair Trade Law, International Trade Law, Consumer Protection Law, Government Purchase Law, Law on Non-Litigation, Compulsory Execution Law, Bankruptcy Law, Arbitration Law, Contract Law , Practice of Civil Law Procedure, Case Studies on Property Law, Court Organization? and Professional Ethics.? In order to accommodate to the abundance of atypical contracts and the varieties of dispute-settlement in recent years, the teachers of our center also give lessons such as Topics on Purchase of Government, Topics on Consumer Protection Law, Case Study on New-Type Contract , and Topics on Arbitration Law for students to further investigate relevant topics . On the other hand, realizing the importance of international trade, our center invites professors from other departments specializing in International Trade Law to improve our students’ research interests and academic development to relevant laws. In the future, conforming to the change of social mode and the progress of internet and biological technology, our center will offer various synthetic courses for students to conduct their research and study.


Book Collection and Facility

The collected Chinese an foreign books amounts to nearly one thousand, including Civil Law, Civil Law Procedure, Fair Trade Law, Consumer Protection Law, Law on Non-Litigation, Compulsory Execution Law, and other books relevant to civil law. In addition, we also have the meeting records of the Civil Research Reformatory Committee and various law periodicals such as Chengchi University Law Review, NTU Law Review, and Taipei University Law Review. Moreover, in conformity with such factors as the social development, varieties of trading types, and rapid changes in technology, our centre will purchase books and periodicals regularly in the future to promote the academic research

 
     Realizing that internet data searching is an indispensable research tools in present days, our center purchase computers and relevant facilities to fasten the speed of data searching. In addition, we have been equipped with Lawbank database, Rootlaw database, and the search engine of Taiwan local law magazines for our faculty and students to search for the information more conveniently in our center. Furthermore, in order to offer a comfortable and convenient environment for teachers and students to discuss the law and to attract senses of belonging, our center will also purchase relevant equipments in the future.


Academic Activities

     The center periodically assists in the holding of Civil Law Research Foundation to promote the dialogues between the academic and practical fields and to enrich the achievement of domestic research on Civil Law. The center also invites scholars and professional to deliver lectures such as closely cooperating with Civil Law Research Foundation and hold academic conferences from time to time. With a view to internationalizing the academic research, the center has invited scholars and professionals from Germany and Japan to participate in our seminars and conferences to discuss and change ideas regarding relevant topics and the latest development. Another concern of the center is to invite scholars from China to present academic papers on the field of Civil Law.

     In addition to the academic activities mentioned above, the center also cooperates with prestigious universities such as Nagoya University and Hokkaido University to promote the development and interaction of the studies of law in the way of exchanging students.

     The professors of the center has long been entrusted by several departments of the government such as the National Science Committee, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to conduct relevant researches in cope with the pulse of society and serves as a member in the organizations such as Public Construction Commission, the Arbitration Association, which has integrated theory and practice in a close term.

     Besides, from the perspective of academic integration and social concern, the center has cooperated with organizations such as Zhinan Legal FoundationLimo FoundationLee and Li FoundationTaiwan Law SocietyCivil Law Research FoundationCivil Procedural Law Research Foundation in holding interdisciplinary conferences and has worked with Zhinan Legal Foundation in offering law consultations for the common public by way of telephone or conversations. Moreover, the center has also participated in the Phlip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition held by Lee and Li Foundation, which has amounted to a fruitful success and been recognized by a lot of people.

     Last, as to the future planning and goal, apart from fulfilling the faculty, purchasing books and journals to further the development of academic research, the center will purchase more computer facility and train the graduate students to be familiar with the operation in order to computerize the research. On the other hand, the center expects to invite more professionals from every field and abroad to take part in seminars and conferences, and to provide a platform for interaction in order to achieve the objective of localizing, professionalizing, and internationalizing. The members of the center will hold small-scaled seminars once in a while, hoping to promote academic research and strengthen the friendship among each other.
